The First Images

A: One Of My Own

I completed this painting of my mother and grandfather in Circular Quay station in 2011 from a photograph. I was exploring the proportions of the figure, tones in the face and shadows of folded and crinkled fabric. The silent conversation between the figures creates a puzzle: a concerned expression on my mother's face accompanied by the treat of a chocolate ice cream and everyday situation of waiting for a train on a busy station are an interesting combination. My grandfather lives overseas, but painting him everyday made his presence almost tangible.

B: Architecture Is Amazing

The Centre Georges Pompidou, designed by Georges Pompidou in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, is France's National Museum of Modern Art, one of the largest in Europe. This building is effectively designed inside out: the structure and mechanical systems usually hidden from view, are exposed and make up the exterior facade of the building. These functional elements are colour coded in bright reds (lifts and escalators), blues (air conditioning), yellows (electrical appliances), and greens (plumbing). The building reveals its interior, becoming a fragile and complex system that parallels to the intricacies of a human skeleton. Unimpeded by mechanical system restrictions, the Centre can host any manner of cultural exhibitions.

C: An Original Photograph

This photograph captures a frozen landscape, paradoxically evoking the movement of gliding or falling. In the formation of ice, these sculptured contours and figures arose, resembling the path of droplets falling in an impossible curve, or satellites experiencing a strange and unexplained phenomenon in space. I took this photograph to illustrate the motion of music as part of my HSC Body Of Work for Visual Art.
